Overview

The Lemosho Route is widely regarded as the most beautiful route on Kilimanjaro, approaching from the west through pristine wilderness. The 8-day itinerary provides exceptional acclimatization and the highest success rate of any standard route. With fewer trekkers in the early days, you'll enjoy a more exclusive mountain experience before joining the Machame trail for the final ascent.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Long scenic transfer from Moshi or Arusha to the remote Londorossi Gate on the western flank of Kilimanjaro (approx. 3 hours). Park registration and lunch at the gate, then drive 30 minutes further up a rough track to the trailhead. A gentle 3-4 hour trek through pristine montane rainforest - one of the most beautiful forests on the mountain. Watch for colobus monkeys, blue monkeys and (rarely) elephant tracks. Arrive at Big Tree Camp (Mti Mkubwa, 2,780m) for dinner. Elevation gain: 680m.

Leave the rainforest behind and climb steadily through the heather zone with its bizarre giant erica trees and everlasting flowers. The first clear views of Kibo's ice fields appear on the horizon. 5-7 hours (approx. 8 km) to Shira 1 Camp (3,500m) on the western edge of the Shira Plateau - an ancient collapsed caldera, one of only three on Kilimanjaro. Evening briefing. Elevation gain: 720m.

A relatively gentle day - vital for acclimatization. 3-5 hour trek (approx. 7 km) across the open Shira Plateau with continuous views of Kibo directly ahead. Arrive at Shira 2 Camp (3,900m) by early afternoon. Optional acclimatization walk higher onto the plateau with your guide after lunch. Dinner at camp under brilliant starlit skies. Elevation gain: 400m.

The classic 'climb high, sleep low' acclimatization day. Ascend steadily to Lava Tower (4,630m), a dramatic rock formation where you'll have hot lunch while your body adapts. Descend into the surreal Barranco Valley, home to giant groundsels and senecios that look prehistoric. 6-8 hours (approx. 10 km) total. Barranco Camp (3,950m) sits beneath the imposing Barranco Wall. Net elevation: +730m then -680m.

Morning scramble up the Barranco Wall - the most exhilarating section of the trek, with hand-over-hand climbing but no technical gear required. Stop for photos at the famous 'kissing rock.' Continue across valleys and ridges under the southern icefields. 4-5 hours (approx. 5 km) to Karanga Camp (3,995m). The shorter day allows rest before the push to high camp. Elevation gain: 45m.

3-4 hour trek across alpine desert to Barafu Camp (4,673m), perched on the exposed saddle below the summit pyramid. Arrive by midday. Gear check with your guide, hot lunch and a brief afternoon nap. Early dinner at 5 PM, in bed by 7 PM. Your guide wakes you at 11 PM for the summit push. Elevation gain: 680m.

Midnight start under a blanket of stars. 6-8 hour ascent on scree and snow, reaching Stella Point (5,756m) at sunrise - a pink dawn igniting the glaciers - then continuing along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the Roof of Africa. Celebrations and photos at the iconic wooden sign. Descend to Barafu for a brief rest and hot meal (3 hours down), then continue to Mweka Camp (3,100m) for dinner. The longest day of your life - 15+ hours total.

A celebratory breakfast with the traditional porters' song and dance ceremony, then a 3-4 hour descent (approx. 10 km) down through wet, green, birdsong-filled rainforest. At Mweka Gate sign out and receive your summit certificates, and distribute tips to your mountain crew. Transfer back to your hotel for a hot shower, a well-earned meal and a comfortable bed - you've just climbed the highest free-standing mountain on Earth.

Frequently Asked Questions

No technical climbing experience is needed. Kilimanjaro is a long, high-altitude trek rather than a climb. Excellent fitness is essential.

You should comfortably hike 6-8 hours per day on consecutive days while carrying a light daypack. Three or more months of structured training (hill walks, stair climbing, cardio) is recommended.

It depends on the route and length: Lemosho 8-day ~95%, Machame 7-day ~85%, Marangu 5-day ~50%. Longer itineraries with extra acclimatisation days have markedly higher summit success.

Almost everyone experiences some symptoms above 4,000 m (mild headache, fatigue, breathlessness). Diamox (acetazolamide) helps. Our guides are trained in high-altitude medicine and we carry emergency oxygen and a pulse oximeter.

The recommended pool tip from each climber is $250-300, distributed by your lead guide across the entire crew (guides, porters, cook). Tipping happens at the gate on the descent day.

Three full hot meals per day plus snacks, prepared by our mountain cook. Boiled and filtered drinking water is provided at every camp.

Yes. Most travellers (US, UK, EU, Canada, Australia) can apply for a Tanzania e-visa online (~$50) before travel, or get a visa on arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport. Allow 7-10 days for e-visa processing.

A Yellow Fever certificate is required only if you are arriving from a yellow-fever country. Recommended (consult your doctor): Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Typhoid, Tetanus, and antimalarial prophylaxis.

Strongly recommended for all travellers and mandatory for Kilimanjaro climbers. Make sure your policy covers high-altitude trekking up to 6,000 m if you are climbing.

A 30% deposit confirms your booking. The remaining balance is due 30 days before arrival. We accept bank transfer, credit card and major mobile money providers.

Yes. Vegetarian, vegan, halal, kosher, gluten-free and other dietary needs can be arranged with advance notice — please flag them when booking.

Free cancellation up to 60 days before departure (deposit refunded minus a small processing fee). Cancellations 30-60 days out: 50% refund. Less than 30 days: no refund. We strongly recommend trip-cancellation insurance.
