Day-by-Day Itinerary

After breakfast at your Moshi hotel, drive to Machame Gate (1,800m) for park registration (approx. 45 min). Meet your mountain crew - lead guide, assistant guides, porters and cook - then begin trekking through dense, vine-draped rainforest. Expect mist, blue monkeys and towering camphorwood trees. 5-7 hour gradual uphill hike (approx. 11 km) to Machame Camp (3,000m). Hot lunch on the trail, three-course dinner at camp. Elevation gain: 1,200m.

Wake to a hot drink delivered to your tent. After breakfast, climb steeply up a rocky ridge out of the forest into the heather and moorland zone with its strange giant ericas. 4-6 hours (approx. 5 km) to the expansive Shira Plateau (3,840m), with dramatic first views of Kibo's icy summit on clear days. Short acclimatization walk in the afternoon. Hot dinner at camp. Elevation gain: 840m.

A crucial acclimatization day following the 'climb high, sleep low' principle. Trek across the Shira Plateau and ascend to Lava Tower (4,630m) for hot lunch, then descend into the lush Barranco Valley filled with otherworldly giant groundsels and senecios. 6-8 hours total (approx. 10 km). Arrive at Barranco Camp (3,950m) beneath the dramatic Barranco Wall. Dinner at camp. Net gain: 110m (but +680m for acclimatization).

Start with the exciting scramble up the Barranco Wall - a steep rocky scramble (no technical climbing required) with stunning photo opportunities at the 'kissing rock.' Continue across a series of ridges and valleys under the southern icefields. 4-5 hours (approx. 5 km) to Karanga Camp (3,995m) on a ridge with Kibo looming overhead. Afternoon rest and acclimatization briefing. Early dinner. Elevation gain: 45m.

A shorter but high-altitude day - your body is working hard on less oxygen. Trek 3-4 hours (approx. 4 km) across alpine desert on the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. Arrive at Barafu Camp (4,673m) by midday. Gear check, hot lunch and a vital afternoon nap. Early dinner at 5 PM, then straight to bed by 7 PM. Your guide wakes you at 11 PM for summit preparations. Elevation gain: 680m.

Midnight departure under head-torches and starlight. 7-8 hour ascent through scree and snow, reaching Stella Point (5,756m) at sunrise - a magical pink dawn over the glaciers - then a final hour along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the Roof of Africa. Photos and celebrations. Descend back to Barafu (3 hours), short rest and lunch, then continue down to Mweka Camp (3,100m). Total: 15+ hours. The hardest and most rewarding day of your life.

A well-deserved rest followed by a victorious breakfast and the traditional porters' song and dance ceremony. 3-4 hour descent (approx. 10 km) through wet, green, alive-with-birdsong rainforest. At Mweka Gate sign out and receive your summit certificates (gold for Uhuru, green for Stella Point). Transfer back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha (approx. 1 hour) for hot shower, celebratory dinner and earned sleep. Tips distributed to the crew at the gate.

Frequently Asked Questions

No technical climbing experience is needed. Kilimanjaro is a long, high-altitude trek rather than a climb. Excellent fitness is essential.

You should comfortably hike 6-8 hours per day on consecutive days while carrying a light daypack. Three or more months of structured training (hill walks, stair climbing, cardio) is recommended.

It depends on the route and length: Lemosho 8-day ~95%, Machame 7-day ~85%, Marangu 5-day ~50%. Longer itineraries with extra acclimatisation days have markedly higher summit success.

Almost everyone experiences some symptoms above 4,000 m (mild headache, fatigue, breathlessness). Diamox (acetazolamide) helps. Our guides are trained in high-altitude medicine and we carry emergency oxygen and a pulse oximeter.

The recommended pool tip from each climber is $250-300, distributed by your lead guide across the entire crew (guides, porters, cook). Tipping happens at the gate on the descent day.

Three full hot meals per day plus snacks, prepared by our mountain cook. Boiled and filtered drinking water is provided at every camp.

Yes. Most travellers (US, UK, EU, Canada, Australia) can apply for a Tanzania e-visa online (~$50) before travel, or get a visa on arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport. Allow 7-10 days for e-visa processing.

A Yellow Fever certificate is required only if you are arriving from a yellow-fever country. Recommended (consult your doctor): Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Typhoid, Tetanus, and antimalarial prophylaxis.

Strongly recommended for all travellers and mandatory for Kilimanjaro climbers. Make sure your policy covers high-altitude trekking up to 6,000 m if you are climbing.

A 30% deposit confirms your booking. The remaining balance is due 30 days before arrival. We accept bank transfer, credit card and major mobile money providers.

Yes. Vegetarian, vegan, halal, kosher, gluten-free and other dietary needs can be arranged with advance notice — please flag them when booking.
