Overview

Mkomazi National Park, on the Kenyan border between Moshi and the coast, is one of Tanzania's least-visited but most rewarding day-trip destinations. Bone-dry and dramatic against the backdrop of the Pare and Usambara mountains, Mkomazi is home to the long-necked gerenuk, fringe-eared oryx, lesser kudu and a successful black rhino sanctuary. A long but unforgettable day for those who want wildlife with no other vehicles in sight.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

5:30 AM: Early hotel pickup in Moshi (or Arusha) for the long drive east toward the Kenyan border (approx. 2.5-3 hours from Moshi). 8:30 AM: Arrive at Zange Gate for park registration. 9:00 AM: Begin a long game drive across the dry savannah - target species include the elegant gerenuk, fringe-eared oryx, lesser kudu, eland, Coke's hartebeest, giraffe, elephant and lion. Mountain views in every direction. 12:30 PM: Picnic lunch under an acacia. 1:30 PM: Optional visit to the rhino sanctuary (subject to permit availability) for a guided drive in the protected fenced area. 3:30 PM: Begin the long drive back to Moshi/Arusha. 7:00 PM: Drop-off at your hotel.
