Day-by-Day Itinerary

Morning pickup from your Arusha hotel. Drive west across the Maasai Steppe and Rift Valley escarpment (approx. 2.5 hours). Afternoon game drive in Lake Manyara National Park - tree-climbing lions, baboon troops, elephant families and flamingo-rimmed shores. Sunset over the Rift Valley from your lodge.

Drive up through the cool Ngorongoro Highlands with a stop at the crater viewpoint. Continue west into the Serengeti via Naabi Hill Gate, game viewing en route. Arrive at your central Serengeti camp by late afternoon. Sunset drinks and dinner under the stars.

Dawn departure with packed breakfast for the most productive predator hour. Explore the Seronera River valley - leopard country - and the open plains beyond. Picnic lunch in the bush. Afternoon drive continues until golden hour, then return to camp for dinner.

Continue tracking the migration depending on the season - south (Jan-Mar), central (Apr-May), west (Jun-Jul) or north (Aug-Oct). Optional sunrise hot-air balloon flight (extra cost). Two full game drives with a midday rest at camp.

Slow game drive exiting the Serengeti via the central corridor. Visit Olduvai Gorge - the 'Cradle of Mankind' museum. Continue to your lodge perched on the Ngorongoro Crater rim, with suites overlooking the entire caldera. Sunset over the crater. Dinner at the lodge.

Early descent into the crater for a half-day game drive on the caldera floor - lion, black rhino, elephant, zebra, buffalo and flamingo. Picnic lunch at the hippo pool. Late-morning ascent. Drive back to Arusha (approx. 3.5 hours), arriving by early evening. Drop-off at hotel or airport.

Best Time to Visit

Plan around peak wildlife, weather and price windows.

Peak season Shoulder / good Off-season

Long Dry Season

Peak
June – October

Peak game viewing. Animals concentrate around waterholes; thinning vegetation makes spotting easy. The iconic Mara River crossings of the Great Migration occur Jul – Sep.

Calving Season

Peak
January – February

The Great Migration calves in southern Serengeti / Ndutu. Dramatic predator action and excellent weather with surprisingly low crowds.

Short Rains

Good
November – December

Brief afternoon showers, lush green landscapes and excellent birding as migrants arrive. Migration herds move south. Lower-season pricing.

Long Rains

Avoid
March – May

Heavy rainfall, muddy roads, some lodges close. Beautiful green scenery and dramatic skies, but the most challenging time for safaris. Lowest prices.
