Day-by-Day Itinerary

Morning pickup from your Arusha hotel at 7:30 AM. Drive southwest across the Maasai Steppe toward Tarangire National Park (approx. 3 hours), with a photo stop at a viewpoint en route. Picnic lunch at the park entrance. Afternoon game drive along the Tarangire River - the park's lifeblood - where you'll encounter huge elephant herds, tawny eagles perched on baobabs and lion prides resting in the midday shade. Check in at your safari lodge for dinner and overnight.

Head out at first light with packed breakfast and lunch boxes. Explore Tarangire's varied habitats - silale swamps, grassy floodplains, baobab-studded hills - tracking elephant matriarchs, waterbuck, buffalo and the unusual long-necked gerenuk. Scan sausage trees for napping leopards. An afternoon drive follows Maasai grazing corridors on the park periphery. Return to the lodge for a sundowner by the campfire, three-course dinner and bush stories from your guide.

Morning game drive as you exit the park, then drive through the fertile Mbulu highlands and onward to Karatu (approx. 4 hours). Lunch at a local lodge, followed by a cultural visit to a Maasai village on the Ngorongoro Conservation Area rim - learning songs, home-building and cattle-herding traditions. Arrive at your lodge overlooking the caldera in time for sunset and a warming highland dinner.

Early breakfast, then the 600-meter descent into the crater - often called 'Africa's Garden of Eden.' Game drive across the 260 sq km caldera floor, prime territory for black rhino, massive-tusked elephant bulls, lion prides, cheetah and enormous herds of zebra and wildebeest. Flamingos line Lake Magadi in pink clouds. Picnic lunch at the hippo pool. Ascend in the late afternoon and celebrate the day with a farewell dinner at the lodge.

After breakfast with one final look at the crater rim, descend through the Great Rift Valley with a photo stop at the Manyara viewpoint. Optional coffee-farm visit with lunch en route. Arrive in Arusha by early afternoon (approx. 3.5 hours). Drop-off at your hotel or Kilimanjaro International Airport for your onward travel.

Best Time to Visit

Plan around peak wildlife, weather and price windows.

Peak season Shoulder / good Off-season

Long Dry Season

Peak
June – October

Peak game viewing. Animals concentrate around waterholes; thinning vegetation makes spotting easy. The iconic Mara River crossings of the Great Migration occur Jul – Sep.

Calving Season

Peak
January – February

The Great Migration calves in southern Serengeti / Ndutu. Dramatic predator action and excellent weather with surprisingly low crowds.

Short Rains

Good
November – December

Brief afternoon showers, lush green landscapes and excellent birding as migrants arrive. Migration herds move south. Lower-season pricing.

Long Rains

Avoid
March – May

Heavy rainfall, muddy roads, some lodges close. Beautiful green scenery and dramatic skies, but the most challenging time for safaris. Lowest prices.
